How to Host a Room Crawl at a Lifestyle Party: The Complete Guide

A room crawl is a pre-party at a lifestyle hotel takeover where couples turn their hotel rooms into mini-parties, prop their doors open, and everyone else hops from room to room to meet each other. To host one, you pick a theme, decorate your room, bring a drink to share, and leave your door open. That's it. Everything else in this guide is how to do it well, and how not to end up owing a hotel a new ceiling.
We've been running room crawls at Lifeinstyle STL parties in St. Louis since 2023. Here's everything we've learned.
Where Room Crawls Came From (For Us, Anyway)
The world had just started traveling again after COVID, and Em and I were on one of our first trips back, at a Temptation party in Mexico with a group organized by Tryst, the travel company Don Hughes created.
That night, the group had set up a room crawl around the hotel. Hotel Open doors up and down the hallway. Music drifting out of every room. Couples leaning in doorways with drinks in hand, waving strangers inside.
I walked into the first room, turned to Em, and said: "We need to adopt this. We can do this back home. Couples are going to love it."
We were hooked. A few months later, room crawls were part of Lifeinstyle, and honestly? They've taken off in a way we never expected.
What Is a Room Crawl, Exactly?
Think of it as a mini party you get to host before the real party begins.
At our hotel takeovers, the room crawl usually runs from 6:00 to 9:00 PM, before the main event kicks off. Host couples decorate their rooms around a theme, set out drinks and snacks, turn on some music, and open their doors. Everyone else wanders the halls, pops in, says hi, and moves on to the next one.
It's the best icebreaker we've ever found. Standing around a ballroom waiting for someone to talk to you is awkward. Walking into a room with glow-in-the-dark planets on the walls and a stranger handing you a shot? Instant conversation.
Why Room Crawls Work So Well at Hotel Takeovers
Here's the thing about a hotel takeover: the whole hotel is yours. No random guests, no confused business travelers in the elevator. That's what makes a room crawl possible, because every door on the floor belongs to someone who's there for the same reason you are.
And the best part isn't the decorations or the drinks. It's what happens after. We've watched so many couples meet in a doorway during a room crawl and leave the weekend as actual friends. As hosts, that's the most fulfilling thing we get to see.
How to Host a Room at a Room Crawl: Step by Step
Step 1: Tell the Organizers You're Hosting (Seriously)
This is the most important step, and the one people forget.
At our events, we group all the hosting rooms together in one area. At smaller hotels that's usually 5 to 10 rooms. At bigger properties, we've had two full floors of room crawl.
So if you're hosting at a Lifeinstyle party, email us at contact@lifeinstylestl.com right after you buy your ticket so we can add you to the room crawl list and place you in the crawl area.
We've had couples forget to email us and end up two floors away from the main crawl, decorated to the nines, wondering where everyone was. Communication, guys. 😅
Step 2: Pick a Theme
The theme usually follows the party. At our Halloween party, everyone goes spooky: creepy décor and themed Halloween shots. At the Playboy Mansion Party, rooms go elegant: pink lights, bow ties, a club feel.
Or go completely off-script. Some of the wildest rooms we've seen:
🎪 A circus room, with a striped tarp turning the whole room into a big top
👽 A space room, full of alien decorations and glow-in-the-dark Milky Way posters
💀 A skeleton DJ. Yes, a skeleton spinning tunes. One of our regular host couples pulled that off last year, and people are still talking about it.
Step 3: Decorate Without Destroying Your Room
Let us tell you about the Gorilla Tape incident.
One host lined her entire ceiling with string lights, held up with Gorilla Tape. It looked incredible. The next day she pulled it all down, and the paint came with it. That hotel room needed to be repainted. 🦍
The lesson: use gentle painter's tape, removable hooks or pins that won't damage walls. Whatever you hang, make sure it comes off clean, or it'll show up on your incidental bill.
Step 4: Stock Up on Drinks & Treats to Share
Bring a drink to share. A signature shot that matches your theme is always a hit. Add some snacks, and you're officially the most popular room on the floor.
Step 5: Open the Door
Prop it open, turn up the music, and welcome people in. Some hosts hang a sign or a decoration outside their door so it stands out down the hall.
Do I Need to Go All Out? (Absolutely Not)
This is the question we get the most, and the answer is no.
You choose how big you go. Want to just open your door and bring a Bluetooth speaker? You're a room crawl host. Want to build a full circus tent with a skeleton DJ? Also a room crawl host.
Keep it simple: door open, a speaker, a bottle to share and a fun door sign.
Go all out: full theme décor, signature themed shots, lighting, props and costumes.
Both work. Both get visitors. Do as much or as little as you want.

Room Crawl Etiquette for Guests
Just walk in. An open door means come on in. Say hi, grab a drink if they offer, and make yourself comfortable. Hosts set up their rooms because they want you there.
There's something about Midwest hospitality that really shines at our room crawls. Everyone is ridiculously friendly. So don't be shy.
A closed door means not right now. The hosts might be taking a breather or out checking out the other rooms. Respect it and come back later.
Respect everyone's space. You're a guest in someone's room. Treat it that way.
Room Crawl Etiquette for Hosts
You don't have to keep your door open the whole time. You're in control. If you need a breather, close the door.
In fact, we recommend it. Close up for a bit and go crawl the other rooms. Couples get so creative, and you'll want to see what everyone put together.
What If Nobody Comes to My Room?
It's the secret fear of every first-time host. Here's the honest truth: some rooms start quiet, and that's normal. It happens most with impromptu rooms that weren't on the list. But people show up sooner or later.
The best way to guarantee traffic? Get on the room crawl list so you're placed right in the action, not two floors away. (See Step 1. We cannot stress this enough!)
Hotel Safety Tips for Room Crawl Hosts
🚨 Skip the smoke machines and real candles. They can set off the smoke alarm, and nobody wants to explain that to the front desk.
🦍 Use gentle tape only. Remember the ceiling.
🧹 Clean up before check-out. Your incidental bill will thank you.

Is the room crawl mandatory?
Not at all. You can host, crawl, or skip it and just enjoy the main party.
